Cassandra's Fingers FX From "Deadpool & Wolverine" Recreated in Houdini

Made by Emīls Geršinskis-Ješinskis using the original mesh.

Emīls Geršinskis-Ješinskis, a VFX Artist whose impressive feats of technical art have wowed us on more than one occasion, has recently paid tribute to Marvel's recently released "Deadpool & Wolverine" movie, presenting a fantastic recreation of one of the film's most memorable visual effects.

Using Houdini, SideFX's renowned procedural 3D software, and the original mesh instead of VDB, Emīls has remade the effect of Cassandra Nova's fingers going through Mr. Padadox's face, with the final result looking quite similar to the one showcased in the movie. "While it may not be the optimal approach, this method produces effective results," commented the creator.

Previously, the creator leveraged Houdini's Vellum to simulate a captivating four-object morph cycle loop that blends seamlessly as each object, representing the four suits of a standard pack of cards, passes the zero location:

Prior to that, Emīls utilized Vellum to set up an incredibly lifelike cloth sim that could deform in a manner similar to real-life plastic wrap:

And back in February, the creator wowed us with his mind-blowing custom setup that uses Houdini and Fabricio Chamon's Vision and Machine Learning data streamer to analyze video footage, detect the number of fingers being held up, and display the result using particles in Houdini:

We highly encourage you to visit Emīls' LinkedIn pageYouTube channel, and official website to see more of his awesome projects.

And if you'd like how the original Cassandra Nova's Fingers VFX was made, we also recommend checking out a recent breakdown shared by Swen Gillberg, the VFX Supervisor on the Deadpool & Wolverine movie, where he explained how digital effects were added to the footage of the actors' performance.
