Environment Art for Games in UE4

w/ Peyton Varney

During this class, students will get to experience the environment pipeline creation from start to finish. This course will go over the process of creating an environment from concept to bringing an idea to life using industry-standard tools and techniques. Students will have a better understanding of how to use their creativity to make something of their own and how to push a piece to a further benchmark. The goal of the class will be to create several high-quality assets that will come together to create one cohesive scene that is well presented.

IP Development for Production

w/ Mark Molnar & Pixoloid Studios

This class is designed to help students create a compelling presentation of their story with visually striking images. Over the course of 10 weeks, students will be guided through the creation of a pitch package so that they can showcase their ability to come up with a suitable design language for a story and carry that across the different aspects of creating a visually cohesive world. While covering the principles of character, prop, environment, and keyframe design, students will be encouraged to use work they have created prior to the course and polish the IP they've already started to build. The goal is to create a final presentation of the development of the heroes, villains, the world they live in, and the adventures they experience. Throughout the course, students will gain feedback from the art directors and senior artists of Pixoloid studios (currently: Mark Molnar, Gaspar Gombos, David Metzger, Janos Gardos).

Procedural Modeling for Production in Houdini

w/ Sean McEwan

This course will be an in-depth look into procedural modeling in Houdini; throughout the course, students will gain a strong understanding of how proceduralism can be used to create powerful modeling workflows. You will explore a variety of concepts used to create procedural assets, with each lesson having a finished product demonstrating the principles of that week. You will learn how to organize your workflows and create artist-friendly interfaces for reusability. Together with CGMA, you'll create several finished model assets with fully procedural controls.

Rigging Techniques: Cartoon to Realistic

w/ Mathias Royrvik

This course is aimed at not just clicking buttons and following the path that Maya lays out, but going deep into the different nodes that Maya has and seeing how you can use this to your advantage to create flexible rigs. At the end of the course, the students should have a good understanding of how data flows through Maya and how they can manipulate this. In addition, they will have solid ideas and techniques for building and maintaining rigs for production.

2D Animation Essentials

w/ Saul Sandoval

Students will develop their visual accuracy when drawing poses, which will help in creating animations that feel more in line with nature and real life. From the basic principles to the importance of emotion, this course will focus on understanding how to create appealing and efficient 2D animations. This course will help students develop a heightened sense of timing related to physics, which will aid in creating sharper instincts for assessing animation integrity. By the end of the course, students will become skilled at strong facial expressions, how to break down a line of dialogue, how to create motion blur, and how to use video reference to improve your animation. Finally, the course will introduce professional animation software that is becoming accepted and implemented more and more throughout the industry.

3D for 2D Artists

w/ Sergio Castaneda

This class will help students understand how powerful 3D is and how to take advantage of different techniques to translate 2D skills into full 3D scenes. Students will render multiple scenes while learning to incorporate 3D techniques into their concept art workflows. Initially, the course will focus on the essential 3D tools to quickly generate great 3D base images that can be presented present as blockouts ready to be polished in a painting software like Photoshop. As the course progresses, students will start working with more complex organic scenes. Finally, students will create an entire environment based on their own 2D drawing or sketch, getting multiple shots to tell a story. The course will also demonstrate why 3D workflows require knowledge of 2D composition and color to have a professional piece.

2D Motion Graphics in After Effects

w/ Mehreen Bazm

Learn how to navigate through basic keyframing tools & techniques in After Effects to create 2D Motion Graphics for personal, advertising, and commercial use. Artists in any field can use these skills to enhance their demo reels, round out a pitch presentation, or add to their portfolios! Students will be assigned strategic projects each week to simulate deadlines, pacing, pipelines, design & animation trends according to the industry standards. From the very beginnings of an idea, to creating design, until the completion of your animation, students will learn basic principles of combining design with motion to create unique and effective 2D animations. Some of the topics that will be covered in this course include: creating effective design layouts, compositing in AE, integrating design assets between Photoshop and After Effects, logo animations, infographics, kinetic type, network branding, show packages, style frames, and basic editing techniques. By the end of the course, students will have a short demo reel to use as their portfolio.
