Cliff Bleszinski Explained Why He Had Declined a Role in Death Stranding

The Gears of War creator shed light on his reasons for choosing not to participate in Hideo Kojima's Death Stranding.

Cliff Bleszinski, the creator and designer of Gears of War, has recently provided insights into his reasons for not participating in Hideo Kojima's Death Stranding.

Bleszinski first revealed that he was close to securing a part in Hideo Kojima's action game in October 2019, shortly before its release. According to him, Kojima had personally invited him to visit the studio for scanning, however, he opted not to participate in the project.

At the time, Bleszinski hadn't shared many details about the specific reasons for the missed opportunity. However, in May 2023, he finally shed some light on the situation by posting a brief message on his Twitter account.

The game designer revealed that he turned down Kojima's offer due to the poor performance of his own game, LawBreakers, which, according to him, left him feeling like a "failure."

"I remember when I was in Japan and had drinks with [Hideo Kojima] and he offered to scan me and put me in Death Stranding and I declined because LawBreakers was cratering and I felt like a loser failure," he wrote.

Recently, Bleszinski has shown interest in reviving his online shooter. In fact, he even was going to contact the head of Nexon to engage in discussions regarding this idea. The game designer, however, clarified that he was not willing to lead the development of the project, but would prefer to act as a consultant to a potential studio that could create the game.
