Bethesda and id Software have released the 6.66 Rev 2.2 update for DOOM Eternal, a relatively minor yet highly significant patch for their beloved action-packed FPS title, which originally hit the gaming scene in March 2022.

According to the developers' release notes, this update has removed the Boosters feature across all platforms and, most notably, stripped away the infamous Denuvo Anti-Tamper from the PC version. This DRM had been in place since the game's release more than three years ago. It's worth noting that the 6.66 Rev 2.2 update will be coming to the Nintendo Switch at a later date, requiring handheld owners to exercise a bit more patience.

Unfortunately, the team didn't offer any explanations for their decision to remove Denuvo, leaving the exact reason behind its removal a mystery. Interestingly, DOOM Eternal also included Denuvo Anti-Cheat upon release, which was removed shortly after the launch following the complaints that the software had been negatively affecting the game's performance.

It's also worth noting that Bethesda's most recent title, Starfield, never featured Denuvo in the first place, suggesting the possibility that the controversy surrounding Irdeto's infamous anti-tamper technology and DRM system may have influenced the company's choice not to incorporate it into their games moving forward.

Said controversy, however, doesn't seem to bother NetherRealm Studios, who just yesterday updated Mortal Kombat 1's Steam page, revealing that the upcoming fighting game will incorporate Denuvo. You can learn more about it here.
