Google Has Open-Sourced Their VR Modeling App Blocks

Easily build 3D models in the VR world with Open Blocks.

Not every one of us masters the special skill of 3D modeling, which requires some training to learn basic knowledge of the modeling software and understand concepts. This might have been made a bit easier now, as Google has decided to open-source Blocks, a tool that offers “a simple, easy and fun way to create 3D objects and scenes, using the new wave of VR headsets.”

Back in 2017, Google announced Blocks with this introduction trailer, showcasing what you can achieve with it: create different low-poly 3D models using the simple tools it provides, move, rotate them, and paint the models — all can be done in a user-friendly way. I mean, it does look much easier than operating the modeling software. Once the model is finished, it can be exported or published on the web to share with others.

Icosa Foundation, a global foundation running Open Brush, the open-source version of Tilt Brush that Google open-sourced in 2021, will be responsible for the development of the open-source version of Google Blocks, which is called Open Blocks. Mike Nisbet from the Icosa Foundation shared the team's excitement for this new quest:

"We're thrilled to see Blocks join Tilt Brush in being released to the community, allowing another fantastic tool to grow and evolve. We can't wait to take the app to the next level as we have done with Open Brush."

You can check out Google’s announcement on their Open Source Blog, and archived Blocks codes can be found here
