Grammy Awards To Add Video Game Score Category

Starting from the next year's awards, five new categories will be added to GRAMMYs, with one of them being the award for the best video game score.

The Recording Academy, the organizer of the Grammy Awards, has announced five new categories for its music awards, with one of them celebrating video game scores.

The category is named Best Score Soundtrack For Video Games And Other Interactive Media and is aimed to recognize "excellence in score soundtrack albums comprised predominately of original scores and created specifically for, or as a companion to, a current video game or other interactive media released within the qualification period."

Other new categories added to the Grammy Awards include Songwriter of the Year, Non-Classical; Best Alternative Music Performance; Best Americana Performance; and Best Spoken Word Poet. The five new categories will be presented starting from next year's awards.

"We're so excited to honor these diverse communities of music creators through the newly established awards and amendments, and to continue cultivating an environment that inspires change, progress and collaboration," Recording Academy CEO Harvey Mason Jr said. "The Academy's top priority is to effectively represent the music people that we serve, and each year, that entails listening to our members and ensuring our rules and guidelines reflect our ever-evolving industry."

Acknowledgment of video game music seems to be a new mainstream in the music industry. For instance, the BBC recently revealed that BBC Proms, an annual eight-week summer season of daily orchestral classical music concerts and other events, will include video game music for the first time, featuring scores from Kingdom Hearts, Shadow of the Colossus, Battlefield 2042, and Dear Esther.
