It's Almost Impossible to Believe That This 3D Maomao Model Is Actually 3D

It's perfect, down to the last minute detail.

Over the past few months, we have encountered a number of outstanding 3D artworks mimicking 2D styles, but this one, presented recently by 3DCG Modeler Takuya Igarashi, also known as choco_ikarashi, might just be the most convincing one we've seen so far.

Unveiled just in time to mark the mid-season of The Apothecary Diaries Season 2, the artwork showcases several expressions of the show's protagonist, Maomao, based on some of the most memorable expressions she makes in the anime. Created using Blender, choco_ikarashi's preferred modeling software, the piece's imitation of 2D is nearly flawless, with only subtle details, such as the hands and hair during the transitions, giving away its true 3D nature.

Unfortunately, the creator hasn't shared any wireframe shots to 100% confirm that it is indeed 3D. However, considering the artwork's approval from Goo Engine creator Dillon Goo and Andrew "the Blender donut guy" Price, both of whom are highly regarded experts in the field, we can confidently say it's not a hoax and congratulate choco_ikarashi for producing what many in the comments are calling the best 2D-looking 3D artwork out there.

Earlier, the creator also celebrated the premiere of The Apothecary Diaries' second season with another fantastic 3D rendition of everyone's favorite kusuriya:

And here are some of choco_ikarashi's earlier works:

It's called 2d cgi using a 3d rig, the end result is not 3d, which is why it looks like it's not 3d. The model used for the poses is 3d but goes through a lot of effects to get rendered as a 2d animated figure
