Tencent could also make other System Shock sequels in the future.
System Shock 3 was announced back in 2015 but then one day just disappeared. The game was developed by OtherSide Entertainment, created by Paul Neurath, the founder of the original studio behind System Shock. However, OtherSide announced that Tencent would be "taking the System Shock franchise forward" in 2020.
It was not immediately clear what exactly it meant for the game, but recently, Nightdive Studios confirmed that the rights for the game were sold to Tencent, and now it's up to the Chinese company to decide whether or not the sequel gets made.
“When we originally acquired the rights to the franchise, we licensed the rights for the third game to Warren [Spector] and Paul [Neurath] at Otherside. They then subsequently sold their rights to Tencent,” Nightdive CEO Stephen Kick told VGC. “So Tencent currently has the rights to the third game, and we have the rights to do the remake of the first game and potentially a remake of the second game. That’s pretty much where it stands right now.”
Tencent could also make other System Shock sequels in the future, but, of course, it needs to finish the third one first.
Kick also said he did not know if either Spector or Neurath were involved in the project, although they are still making games and are even providing regular feedback on the remake developed by Nightdive.
