Obsidian's Avowed Launches to Low Player Numbers But Positive Reviews

The game has peaked at just over 17,000 concurrent players on Steam.

While 2024 brought us a slew of poorly made AAA titles that flopped both commercially and in terms of their rating scores, there were some exceptions that did manage to win over the hearts of the gaming community but failed to translate that love into impressive player numbers, with the prime example being Indiana Jones and the Great Circle. Joining its Microsoft-owned peer is Obsidian's fantasy RPG Avowed, which finally launched on February 18 to positive reviews but, unfortunately for its creators, underwhelming player count.

Challenging projections that claimed Avowed's low number of concurrent users was simply due to its pre-release status, the RPG peaked at just over 17,000 players on Steam following its official launch – a less-than-stellar performance given the developer's pedigree.

For comparison, Obsidian's undeniable magnum opus, Fallout: New Vegas, had 30K concurrent players on release day in 2010 and peaked at over 51K the following weekend, while Bethesda's Skyrim – the game some compared Avowed to – still consistently peaks at around 35,000 players daily, coincidentally standing at the same 17K users at the moment of writing. 2020's The Outer Worlds, the game Obsidian specifically highlighted as the best comparison for Avowed, showed similar results, reaching a peak of 20K players on its release date.

At the same time, the game holds an impressive 81% review score on Steam, with the community's feedback being somewhat mixed, as some reviewers praise Avowed's world, characters, writing, and combat, while others criticize the very same aspects.

The general consensus seems to be that Avowed is a solid, albeit slightly overpriced, game that you can enjoy playing, but comparing it to the aforementioned RPGs would be a mistake. One reviewer succinctly described it as a "junk food RPG – easy to digest and definitely tasty but not nutritious," which, judging by the clown-emoji-filled Steam reviews, appears to be the best summary one could come up with.

So, what are your thoughts on Avowed's first-day performance? Have you tried the game yourself yet? What aspects of Avowed have you found the most magnetic? Tell us in the comments!

It's possible people are getting tired of spending $70 to $90 for mediocre games when the indies are pumping out great games for a fraction of the price.  I wait for reviews and a price drop for nearly everything now.

Probably shouldn't judge player numbers based on Steam since there is a huge "Microsoft Studios" title card and the game is just on Game Pass which has 34,000,000(34 million for those that don't want to count the zeros). subscriptions out there.

Surely PC Game Pass and Game Pass Ultimate are affecting those numbers though? It's not a like-for-like comparison when a chunk of the playerbase won't be playing it on Steam this time.
