Rue Valley's Devs Break Down The Comic-Inspired Art Style

Rue Valley, whose comic-style visuals and overall design will likely remind you of Disco Elysium, is a narrative-driven RPG about a man trapped in a time loop, surrounded by a vibrant cast of characters, each with their own intricate emotional backstories and hidden secrets. The goal here is to break free from the loop, uncover the source of this mysterious anomaly, and ensure that each new day is more alive than the last.

The game's art style is undeniably eye-catching, and the developers have provided a brief breakdown of how it was achieved. Each scene begins as a hand-drawn illustration, which is then layered onto 3D geometry. Artistic lighting controlled by shaders accentuates the brushstrokes and textures, and even the reflections are hand-drawn, adding to the game's sense of interactivity while enhancing its stylized aesthetic.
