Sons of the Forest Teases AI Companion & Custom Building

IGN shared more details in its hands-on preview.

Sons of the Forest, the sequel to the survival horror The Forest, will be released next month, but there is still a lot to be uncovered about the game. In its hands-on preview, IGN shared what we should expect, revealing an AI companion, smarter enemies, a custom building system, and more.

The game follows a similar plot to the prequel: you end up on an island, looking for a missing person – this time, a billionaire – in the unfriendly forest.

The sequel remains a survival game, so you'll still be building your base and trying to fend off hordes of cannibalistic mutants. However, this time you won't be alone as you're given Kelvin – a reliable companion that can help you do whatever you ask him to. He can't speak but that doesn't stop him from gathering resources, defending the bas, and just being there in your solo or multiplayer experience. Just like you, Kelvin needs rest, water, and respect, so if you're not nice to him, his productivity will drop.

Kelvin is not the only companion you can find in the game. You can even recruit a three-armed and three-legged mutant Virginia and other people, apparently.

New AI has touched not only your "friends"; the enemies are now smarter too, with their decision-making abilities improved. Cannibals don't blindly attack you but react according to the situation and external influences. They even console their fallen friends, change their clothes depending on the weather, and can organize religion.

The building system has also been changed and now gives you more creative freedom: you can decide what your house will look like and where to place the logs or do it the old way – snapping materials to blueprints.

Judging from the article, Sons of the Forest seems better than its predecessor in every way. Let's see what it brings when the game is out on February 23.
