Square Enix Explained Why FFVII Rebirth Won't Be Coming to PS4

According to the studio, the game will be exclusive to PS5 partly because it has high-quality graphics that needs the power of the PS5's SSD.

Last month, Square Enix unveiled the first look at the upcoming Final Fantasy VII Rebirth revealing that the project will become the second standalone chapter in the Final Fantasy VII remake trilogy. Unlike the previous part, Final Fantasy VII Remake, which was released for PlayStation 4 prior to PlayStation 5 and PC, the game is said to be exclusive for PS5.

In a recent interview with the Japanese website Gamer, the developers explained why the new installment will be released as a PS5 exclusive.

According to FFVII series executive producer Yoshinori Kitase, the quality of graphics and the SSD access speed played a crucial role in the studio's decision not. to release the game for PS4.

"It’s exclusive to PlayStation 5 because of the graphical quality, of course, as well as SSD access speed," Kitase said (translated by Gematsu).

"Since the adventure unfolds in a vast world after the escape from Midgar, loading stress is an extreme bottleneck. We felt we needed the specifications of PlayStation 5 to overcome that and travel the world comfortably," he added.

Loading assets was indeed a problem in the first part of the remake on PS4 – the engine sometimes did not load high-quality textures, although they were in the game files. It's likely that Final Fantasy VII Rebirth on PS5 shouldn't have these issues anymore.
