Starfield Becomes Bethesda's Worst-Rated Game on Steam

It's even worse than Fallout 76.

Last week, Bethesda's recently-released space-themed RPG Starfield broke a new anti-record and became the lowest-rated Bethesda game on Steam, with only 71% of the game's 96K user reviews being positive.

While the studio's new IP still retains its Mostly Positive status, its approval rating has significantly declined over the past few weeks, making Starfield, in the eyes of the Steam community, the worst Bethesda has to offer. With only 71% of reviews being positive, the new RPG has a lower rating than all The Elder Scrolls games (Morrowind, Oblivion, and Skyrim), Fallout 3 and 4, and even the widely-disliked Fallout 76, which is currently rated 1% higher than Starfield.

The primary reason behind the negative reviews appears to be rooted in Starfield's approach to its main storyline and quest design. Several users have pointed out that the majority of the game's side quests and faction missions are unexciting and uninspired, while the main quest and its conclusion leave much to be desired.

Additional criticisms target the game for its lackluster NPCs and companions, underwhelming gunplay and economy systems, repetitive space battles, unnecessary perks and gameplay mechanics, and, of course, the unimpressive procedurally generated environments.

Starfield's new Steam rating now seems to be more in line with the one the game has on Metacritic, where the game has a user score of 6.7 and a "Mixed or Average" status:

Other Bethesda games are rated on Steam as follows:

  • Fallout 76 – 72%
  • Fallout 3 – 80%
  • Fallout 4 – 82%
  • Fallout Shelter – 90%
  • The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim – 92%
  • The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind – 95%
  • The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion – 95%

Previously, NBA 2K24, the latest installment in the well-known basketball simulator series developed by Visual Concepts, also broke a similar anti-record, getting the title of Steam's lowest-rated game. You can read the full story here.

The problem with StarField is that Bethesda jank kind of overstayed it's welcome. You know releasing buggy games with shallow systems and counting on mods to fix it and add basic features, like FOV and gamma slider. Or to make things less annoying, like very low weight limit, fix stutter on weapon swap, allow you to open door and get to lockpicking and other screens out of scanner mode,... oh, and add variety to everything you find in space, because they created way too few locations for number of planets and even going for stuff from quests, you quicklu are exploring same buildings, same enemies, same clutter placement, same companion comments,... only thing random is weapons you find in same locations. While Radient AI is coming next year, you know that thing that makes NPCs feel alive with daily routines, so they don't live for their function and yo pile up on location you are seen sneaking in and stand there like idiots. Plus space flight us functionally barely more than menus or point a scanner, with occasional space battle. Oh and loading screens like it is still time of Oblivion. Since they use Gamebryo Engine they updated a bit and renamed to Creation Engine. So yeah, golden times of Bethesda jank is cute reached their peak with Skyrim and while their games will never be considered bad, they will get around 7/10 they actually deserve. Sure mods can turn it in 8 or 9 out of 10, but this doesn't count, mods aren't made by Bethesda.
