Character Artist Recreated His Cat In 3D With Houdini

Yifan Wang created a highly realistic 3D model of his pet.

Take a look at this cute cat visualized in 3D by a talented Creature Character Artist and 3D Generalist, Yifan Wang. The cat is the artist’s pet named Khaos:

The portrait looks highly realistic, with the cat's lively look and detailed hair and whiskers. This project focused on procedural grooming in Houdini and rendering with Mantra/Redshift, which allowed for realistic representation.

According to the artist, every step, from the initial concept to the final render, has been a rewarding and educational experience. Yifan Wang used the previously created Maine Coon cat model, building on it with procedural grooming nodes. He started with the foundational structures and layers, capturing fur’s natural flow and volume.

The rendering stage significantly contributed to the high level of graphic fidelity of the final image. Lighting and shading made the fur more detailed. The final look development was completed in Nuke.

Below is the Maine Coon 3D model that served as the base for this cat's portrait. "This project is an in-depth anatomical study of a Maine Coon cat, encompassing the construction of a comprehensive 3D asset library from skeletal structure to musculature and finally to the skin," explained Yifan Wang on his ArtStation page.
