Experimenting With Facial Character Animation in Unreal Engine 5

Wang Chen revisited a 2022 character model to practice lighting and test facial animation in UE5.

Wang Chen, a professional 3D Character Artist and Art Director at Game Science, whose name 80 Level regulars would instantly recognize for their lifelike digital characters, has once again wowed the audiences by showcasing the results of their latest experiment with facial animations in Unreal Engine 5.

Using a character model originally created in 2022 with Maya and Substance 3D Painter, Wang set out to practice character lighting and test facial binding and animation in UE5. To capture the head and eye movements, the artist used an iPhone, and with the help of UE5.5's new voice driver, Wang was able to animate the mouth as well.

The voice lines and dubbing, which you can listen to over on Wang's ArtStation, were taken from the creator's favorite martial arts film, the 1994 Hong Kong action-romance Ashes of Time.
