2025 is the "most critical" to prove it's the "work of visionaries."
Meta
Executives of big companies are still thinking about turning the idea of the metaverse into some kind of universe inside the universe, and Meta is the leader of this research. Despite the fact its Reality Labs division, which is responsible for VR, AR, and AI initiatives, loses billions of dollars every quarter, Meta stays on course, although it seems the company has started to worry about its metaverse endeavors.
Its CTO Andrew Bosworth published a post titled "2025: The Year of Greatness" on Meta's internal forum Workplace (via Business Insider), where he said that it's time for the metaverse to prove its worthiness or flop miserably.
"We need to drive sales, retention, and engagement across the board but especially in [mixed reality]," he said. "And Horizon Worlds on mobile absolutely has to break out for our long term plans to have a chance. If you don't feel the weight of history on you then you aren't paying attention.
"This year likely determines whether this entire effort will go down as the work of visionaries or a legendary misadventure."
Bosworth said that he had seen smaller groups "achieve better results than our more generously funded teams." Some of the effort falls on Reality Labs, which is planning to release several AI-powered wearable devices.
"On paper 2024 was our most successful year to date but we aren't sitting around celebrating because know it isn't enough. We haven't actually made a dent in the world yet. The prize for good work is the opportunity to do great work."
Very inspiring words, although I can't help but remember that one phrase from Arcane: "In the pursuit of great we failed to do good." Let's hope Meta's work ends better for everyone than what happened there.
Bosworth continues that greatness is an opportunity and a choice. If you want to get hyped up with those wise words, I suggest reading the whole memo here.
