"Brands should be able to enforce the brand guidelines."
Joining forces with Epic Games is a logical step for Disney, who already has various skins from Marvel and Star Wars in Fortnite. However, the "persistent universe" the companies are building is something else, larger and better.
By investing $1.5 billion in Epic, Disney secured a spot under Tim Sweeney's metaverse umbrella. There, Disney will be connected to Fortnite and provide players with various opportunities to play, watch, and buy content from Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, Avatar, and other franchises. People will be able to create their own stories and share content with each other within this world.
But if you were dreaming about arming your childhood hero with a gun, you might be disappointed: not every character will be given one.
“Not every outfit will be able to do everything,” Epic Games EVP Saxs Persson told The Verge. “A [Lego] minifig doesn’t hold a gun. Brands should be able to enforce the brand guidelines to the degree that they’re comfortable with that brand being associated with particular ratings.”
Disney, Epic Games
It seems like Disney isn't comfortable with certain audiences seeing weapons and violence associated with its characters, but I'm sure they'll find something else to do. “Some IPs are not teen IPs or mature IPs. They are E for everyone IPs,” Persson added.
For now, enjoy personalities from Marvel and Star Wars as well as Mr. and Mrs. Incredible, Maleficent, Cruella de Vil, and Captain Hook in Fortnite.
So no Mickey Mouse with a gun. But if you want to see one, check out MOUSE, an old-school first-person shooter with an interesting style.
Epic's persistent universe will be possible with Unreal Engine 6, which will feature all Unreal Engine 5 tools and Verse, a new programming language that offers powerful customization capabilities, like manipulating or chaining together devices and creating new game logic.
In a recent interview, Sweeney shared more details about his vision, saying Unreal Engine 6 will let developers “build an app once and then deploy it as a standalone game for any platform.”
