Blizzard revealed an epic cinematic for the World of Warcraft: The War Within expansion at BlizzCon 2023 a week ago, featuring Anduin Wrynn and Thrall. If you were struck by the quality of the 3D models, here is a closer look at Anduin, brought to you by senior character and creature modeler Jamir Blanco.
"Our heroes Anduin and Thrall find themselves drawn together by a radiant vision emanating from within the heart of the world. Find out what comes next in the opening chapter of The Worldsoul Saga story arc with the newest expansion World of Warcraft: The War Within: coming in 2024."
Blanco was responsible for sculpting and modeling Anduin's cloak using ZBrush, Maya, and Marvelous Designer, which was "a fun challenge," according to him as it needed to be simulated physically right and had to "hold up well for all the extreme close-ups."
"All the folds are modeled/sculpted in since we wanted to establish the final look and layering of the cloak in modeling, rather than later on in simulation (to not leave the folds and layering to chance or have them be random)."
Wear and tear, little holes were also all modeled by hand, with no displacement used on the cloak. Everything in the cloak is true geometry, which makes it "quite dense in order to get all the folds, layering, tattering, holes, and everything represented. This forced us to push the limits of how dense the geometry for simulation can be but resulted in a much more pleasant and realistic outcome."
The rest of the model was created by lead character modeling artist Jason Huang.
Blanco also helped create some of the production models, sculpts, and displacements for Thrall's armor.
