Microsoft Announced API to Integrate Super Resolution

DirectSR is not a new upscaler but will help developers work with existing ones easier.

Microsoft has announced DirectSR, an API that enables seamless integration of Super Resolution (SR), an upscaling solution that increases visual quality, into games. Created together with AMD and NVIDIA, it provides developers with a "smoother, more efficient experience that scales across hardware."

"This API enables multi-vendor SR through a common set of inputs and outputs, allowing a single code path to activate a variety of solutions including NVIDIA DLSS Super Resolution, AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution, and Intel XeSS."

DirectSR was first thought to be Microsoft's own upscaler that would let you "use AI to make supported games play more smoothly with enhanced details," noticed by an X/Twitter user, but this is not the case. The tech will be available soon in the Agility SDK as a public preview.

If you want to know more about it, don't miss the company's GDC talk in March, where it will preview it and "showcase the latest updates, demos, and best practices for game development".
