New Way to Improve 3D Gaussian Splatting

AtomGS promises more detailed models with less noise.

The research of 3D Gaussian Splatting (3DGS) keeps moving, with specialists working on ways to improve the quality of the final model. Atom Gaussian Splatting (AtomGS) is a new method that bumps rendering quality, "enhancing reconstruction geometry accuracy, and ensuring superior 3D mesh creation."

3D Gaussian Splatting is a rendering technique that leverages 3D Gaussians to represent the scene, thus allowing one to synthesize 3D scenes out of 2D footage. Simply put, it takes samples of images and turns them into 3D scenes without creating meshes by converting a point cloud to Gaussians using machine learning. You can learn more about it here.

It was created to address the issue of noisy geometry and blurry artifacts that might appear during the processing. It consists of Atomized Proliferation and Geometry-Guided Optimization. 

"The Atomized Proliferation constrains ellipsoid Gaussians of various sizes into more uniform-sized Atom Gaussians. The strategy enhances the representation of areas with fine features by placing greater emphasis on densification in accordance with scene details. In addition, we proposed a Geometry-Guided Optimization approach that incorporates an Edge-Aware Normal Loss. This optimization method effectively smooths flat surfaces while preserving intricate details."

As the researchers noted, 3DGS alternates between densification and optimization. AtomGS constrains Gaussians that represent details into Atom Gaussians and prioritizes their proliferation to align with the scene's inherent geometry.

The creators claim that AtomGS outperforms existing methods in rendering quality and delivers competitive accuracy in geometry reconstruction. Moreover, it offers "a significant improvement" in training speed compared to other methods.
