Japanese-Style Oni Demon Made in ZBrush & Substance 3D Painter

The author also shared a detailed guide on setting up hair with XGen without it crashing.

Have a look at Oni, a highly detailed 3D creature model inspired by demons from Japanese folklore, showcased by Timothe Fontaine, a Character Artist who is certainly no stranger to spooky and haunting creatures, considering his 2+ years of experience working on Dead by Daylight.

Based on Bogdan Rezunenko's 2D concept, the demon was created using a variety of 3D software, such as ZBrush, Substance 3D Painter, Maya, Arnold, XGen, and Procreate. While working on the creature, the artist also wrote "60 Crashes Later – Learning XGen the Hard Way," a detailed guide on how to set up hair with XGen without it crashing. You can check out the free tutorial over here.

On top of that, Timothe also wrote a short character description to give Oni a background story:

"The Nameless Oni was once a powerful demon, born of the shadows and bound by the will of the gods. His third arm, a grotesque and unnatural gift, marked him as different from his kin. Feared and shunned by other oni, he was cast into isolation, his twisted form a symbol of his disgrace.

Consumed by his anger and frustration, he turned his wrath on his own kind, slaughtering those who had mocked him. Now, the land lies silent, the last of the oni extinguished, and the Nameless Oni roams alone, a forgotten demon, cursed to bear the weight of his rage and the burden of his solitude."
