This Jaw-Dropping House Drawing Blurs the Line Between 2D and 3D

Digital Artist Ram showcased the amazing capabilities of the Feather 3D app.

The trend involving 2D and 3D Artists bending the dimensions to their will and making it difficult to understand whether you're looking at a 2D painting or a 3D model continues with Ram, a talented Digital Artist also known as bodam.sketch, presenting a truly mind-blowing artwork that recently went viral and got nearly 700K likes on Instagram in one day.

Featuring a cozy, Mediterranean-style building, the piece masterfully blurs the line between dimensions. At first glance, it looks nearly indistinguishable from a fully-realized 3D model, yet it's shown to have been drawn in 2D in the artist's showcase video. According to Ram, the project was made possible with Feather, a sketching app that allows artists to essentially "draw in 3D."

Also, check out some of Ram's previous works:

If you're interested in trying Feather for yourself, you'll be glad to know the application was updated to version 1.0 recently, getting new brush styles and patterns, geometric primitives to draw on spheres, cylinders, cones, or rings as a base, and a new Liquify tool lets you interactively deform strokes in 3D.

Here's the list of key Feather 1.0 features:

  • Fully Offline: Use anywhere without an internet connection;
  • Shapes: Draw straight lines, circles, ellipses, and smooth curves;
  • Eraser: Works exactly as you expect it to;
  • Live Mirror: Draw symmetrical lines with a virtual mirror;
  • Import Reference: Insert images or 3D models into your workspace;
  • Clipboard: Display reference images in a separate window;
  • Background Image: Insert colors or images behind your 3D artwork;
  • AR View: View 3D creations in real-world spaces;
  • Share: Generate a 3D viewer link to share your artwork;
  • Folders: Organize drawings into folders for easy access;
  • Geometric Primitives: Draw on spheres, cylinders, cones, or rings;
  • iCloud Support: Back up your files and keep them safe.

We also recommend checking out our 2023 interview with the Feather team, who told us about their flagship program, discussed the vision behind the software, provided an overview of its features, and explained how they work with the community.

Speaking of the 2D/3D trend, back in late March, 3DCG Modeler Takuya Igarashi showcased a 2D-style 3D model of Maomao, the protagonist of The Apothecary Diaries, created using Blender. Much like Ram's outstanding house, the piece was widely praised, with many calling it the most convincing example of 3D artwork mimicking a 2D aesthetic:
