According to numerous reports, to align with the regulations of the European Union's Digital Market Act, Apple has halted the distribution of Progressive Web Apps within the EU region.

Posted on the Developer site support page, Apple cited intricate security and privacy issues linked to web applications using browser engines other than Apple's own WebKit engine as the primary reason for this decision.

"[This] would have required building an entire new integration architecture that does not currently exist in iOS and was not practical to undertake given the other demands of the DMA and the very low user adoption of Home Screen web apps," as stated there (via GamesIndustry.biz).

However, the company noted that users will have the ability to access websites directly from their home screens through bookmarks.

"We regret any impact this change – that was made as part of the work to comply with the DMA – may have on developers of Home Screen web apps and our users," stated the company.

As a result, the EU has initiated preliminary actions toward a formal investigation into Apple.

"In that context, we're in particular looking into the issue of progressive web apps, and can confirm sending the requests for information to Apple and to app developers, who can provide useful information for our assessment," the European Commission stated to the Financial Times.
