Quixel's Ecosystem with Luis Cataldi: Art & Animation Summit

Luis Cataldi was part of the devcom Art & Animation Summit, giving an in-depth look at Quixel's ecosystem.

Luis Cataldi has been working in the computer graphic industry for more than 20+ years in a variety of roles from character rigger, FX artist to art director. His work has appeared in television shows, music videos, theme park rides, feature animated movies, and AAA video games.

Luis became impassioned with teaching in the late-1990s and conducted numerous workshops at The School of Visual Arts and as well as served as an instructor at New York University. He joined Epic Games in 2014 to help develop the education team and has served as the Global Education Evangelist, Director, Education & Learning Resources for the Unreal Engine, and currently holds the title of Lead Evangelist for the Quixel team.

'Quixel has a library called Megascans library which is over 16 000 photogrammetry-based assets. Quixel has the mission of scanning the world. Our mission is to enable creators, brands, and players to easily make high-quality content by simplifying world creation, content delivery, and 3D scanning', says Luis. 

Luis guides through all the tools of Quixel, demonstrating the behind-the-scenes screens of the scans' creation and the ways the artists can benefit from using these tools. He has also shared the innovative Quixel's ways to scan the world: 

  • Drone scanning 
  • Laser scanning 
  • Scanning of buildings
  • Massive 4km2  terrain scanning
  • Scanning of full biomes 

In the end, Luis will demonstrate a real-time creation process of the scene using megascans.
