ESA Confirms E3 Will Return in 2023 As Both Physical and Digital Event

The 2022 summer season of gaming presentations promises to be quieter than it usually was. This year we again won't see the major trade event for the video game industry, E3 – the show was supposed to be held online due to the ongoing pandemic, although on May 31 it was revealed that the event was entirely canceled.

This is the second time in three years that E3 faces complete cancellation – first, the event was called off in 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic but in 2021, it returned in an online format. This year, the E3 organizer, the Entertainment Software Association, however, decided to skip the event to "devote all [its] energy and resources to delivering a revitalized physical and digital E3 experience next summer."

In a recent Washington Post interview, ESA president and CEO Stan Pierre-Louis confirmed that next year E3 will return in full – both as an online and in-person event.

"We’re excited about coming back in 2023 with both a digital and an in-person event,” Pierre-Louis said. "As much as we love these digital events, and as much as they reach people and we want that global reach, we also know that there’s a really strong desire for people to convene — to be able to connect in person and see each other and talk about what makes games great."

Although typically, the organizers announce the dates of the next E3 at the end of the current event, last year they didn't do so which eventually led to this year's cancellation. And while Pierre-Louis promises that the event will return in 2023, the dates of the show are yet to be announced.

Meanwhile, the 2022 summer season is not completely quiet. Soon, the game fans will be able to see Summer Game Fest which will be held from June 9 to June 12. The opening ceremony of the event will feature 30-40 games and have an array of announcements and updates.
