Generate 3D Meshes of Real World in Houdini Using Google Maps

David Gallardo presented a nice tool for potentially recreating the whole planet.

All-encompassing digital twins are now a step closer thanks to this Houdini Digital Asset created by David Gallardo. The tool uses Google's photorealistic 3D tiles API to generate high-resolution meshes of the real world.

Whatever you see on Google Maps is easily recreated with this HDA, with both meshes and textures. According to Gallardo, it even worked with the free Apprentice Edition of Houdini.

All you need to start is a Google Cloud account, some Python packages, and the SideFX Labs package the creator points to on GitHub.

There, Gallardo also offers comprehensive instructions on how to configure the EarthMesh node and adjust the parameters to make your scene the way you want it.
