The Mario creator talked about the movie's reception and its Japanese version.
The Super Mario Bros. Movie has been a huge hit since its first day; now it's the most financially successful video game-based film adaptation of all time. Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto acknowledged its fame and said it'd surpassed his high expectations:
“I did have a level of expectations that this movie would also do well [like the Super Nintendo World theme park], but I was very surprised that it went beyond what I could have imagined when it finally came out,” he said (via VGC).
The developer also addressed critics' disappointing reviews, saying they contributed to the movie’s "notoriety and buzz."
The Japanese version of the movie will be released on April 28 and it will be different from what other countries have already seen. Nintendo wanted to create a more engaging film for its home audience.
"For this Japanese version, we wanted to create a script that wouldn’t be awkward when compared to Chris’s [the director] version, so we were involved in various ways up until the voice recording. Basically, over the past decade or so, I’ve been quite conscious of creating dramas in my daily life."
